When applying for a credit card, most of the banks ask for a prior type of credit history or some type of warranty that we will be good payers. But usually, everyone gets his or her first credit card when they go to college or when they are in their senior years of high school, which makes it impossible to give the banks the required credit history or warranty. Although it is true, that finding the right issuer and building a credit card history is not easy, but it can be done.

How to get your first credit card

Whenever you apply for a credit card, the first thing the bank will probably ask for, is your credit history. If you are applying for a first time, you obviously wont have any credit history and this makes the banks unable to positively respond to your application. There are two things that you can do to solve this problem.

Look for Special Offers

Try to look for an issuer with a special offer. There are many banks that offer credit cards for people who are just starting their first credit line. Although you may not have an extended credit line at first, but if you prove to be a good-payer and a loyal customer to the bank, you are likely to receive more credit line in time.

Build a credit history yourself

But if, however you are unable to find an issuer that is ready to give you a first chance with credit lines, then you will have to build a credit history yourself. This can be done by getting credit cards from gas stations or from stores. There are gas stations, supermarkets and department stores that offer fidelity credit cards to their customers. Once you get such a card, make sure to balance the bills responsibly and then re-apply to a bank after some months for a credit card.

Things to consider

Young people are eager to get their first credit cards but they should know that its not only about getting one, along with a credit card comes the responsibility to use it properly.

  • Getting their cards for the first time, most youngsters hit the shops as soon as they have the card and spend much more than they can pay back. You should keep in mind that there are no grace periods and the banks wont let you go just because you are new.
  • All late payments count as bad credit and if you spend more than you can payback, you are in danger of having your credit ceased as soon as it was approved.
  • The banks will also consider you a “bad” client if you lose your credit card or if you forget credit card information often.
  • Be careful when you are dealing with money and it is better to note down all the information regarding your card and the transactions you have made with it.
  • It is always better to go for only one credit card in the beginning. It will help you to get familiarized with the banking world, the card system and it is also a test to see if you can balance money. After some time, if you have managed your first card well then you can go for another one.

Although it is difficult for everyone to get their first cards, be patient and follow these tips. And when you do get one, use it sensibly and responsibly. Always keep records of card information, of the transactions made with it, and make it a point to never overspend or delay payments. This will make you a responsible client, having a good credit history, helping you to get better financial offers in the future.
