This problem could lead you to the point where you become frustrated and nostalgic every time the phone rings. No matter how much debt anyone owes, it is not fair to irritate one to this extent. And due to the recent credit crisis, there has been a major increase in the number of debt collectors.

Ignoring Will Not Solve The Problem

Most people will solve this problem by trying to ignore the phone, thinking that eventually the person calling will get tired of calling and hang up.

But most probably, the person calling you is just an hourly employee, who has been hired to call huge lists of people one by one in order to make arrangements to collect on debts owed to their employers. Thus they are calling thousands of numbers a day, so be sure that your number is not going to stand out to them, whether you answer or not.

Therefore, there is no way to get out of this mess unless you address the matter directly. Your number will remain on these employee’s lists, and they’ll keep calling you, no matter how much you try to ignore them.

Negotiations are Possible

The good news is that if a company is making phone calls to you, it means that they really want their money. This is good news for you because it means that they will likely be responsive to negotiations.

The company may want their money so badly, that they may be willing to settle on your terms and conditions and even accept reduced lump-sum payments, or set up payment plans that will allow you to pay off your debt one small monthly payment at a time. This will also enable you to stop the interest from accumulating.

Confront the Problem Rather Than Ignore It

It is always best to talk to the company rather than ignore them. If you keep on ignoring them, it may take the company to the point where they’ll have no other option left but to take legal action against you. This can become a horrible situation for you especially if you’re trying to rebuild your credit, because even after you pay the accounts off, court judgments remain on your credit report for as long as seven years.

Conclusion

The only way out of debt is by confronting it and this is a part of becoming a responsible consumer. The right way to go about this is not by ignoring your creditors, but by confronting these problems head-on, and with honesty, promising yourself that, you’ll avoid such of financial mistakes in the future that bring this kind of situation about in the first place.
