In 2008, the cost of gas alone, for an average household was almost $4k, which was $3k the previous year. Whereas, the cost of home energy was around $2.4k last year, which is $300 dollars higher than it was in 2007.

Depletion of natural resources has made it difficult to reduce energy costs

With the continuous depletion of natural resources, it is unlikely that the energy will get cheaper anytime soon. Although more efficient technologies may come with time that will enable us to save energy, but in order to survive financially currently, we have to look at what we’re doing now.

Reduce living costs by cutting down the use of energy

Thus it is better to try and reduce living costs, and debt, by cutting down the use of energy. There are many ways in which we can do this, and they are not that difficult too. Some simple changes in our behavior, or by implementing some cheap fixes, we can reduce the costs of living.

Use energy-efficient bulbs for lighting

One of easiest methods of saving energy is by switching to energy-efficient bulbs for lighting. Although their cost may be more than normal bulbs, you can save a significant amount of money as they use roughly a third less energy than conventional bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. This can give you a saving of at least $50 dollars or greater for each bulb installed.

Lower the temperature on the water heater

You can also lower the temperature on the water heater, or the household temperature if in use. You can still avail the facility of hot water and warm room, but a reduction of a few degrees help you to cut back energy costs.

Generally, follow an energy efficient behavior. Wrap the water heater, clean the air filters, seal the cracks, and turn off unnecessary lights. This way you can contribute to energy savings by as much as 20% or greater depending on your household circumstances.
