A question arises in the minds of medical students that, will there be anything in the health-care bill for encouraging young physicians to go into primary care?

There are incentives in all health-care bills under consideration in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate to encourage more and more medical students to go into primary-care fields like internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine and geriatrics, where physicians handle patients’ routine checkups and sick visits.

In most recent years, several more medical students have abandoned those fields and has opted specialty careers as they offer better pay and shorter hours.

It has been shown by the data released in June by the medical recruiting firm Merritt Hawkins that the average yearly income for family physicians is $172,000, while for orthopedic surgeons it’s $439,000.

Often those physicians who are graduated from medical school with six-figure student loans, and the higher pay helps these specialists to pay off their loans more quickly.
