Loan forgiveness program for teachers is still not fully understood or there is a lack of good advertising about these programs. This program is especially designed for those teachers need help to pay off their loans, but requirements may be different as they wanted.

There is a good and bad news for teachers who are in debt. As we all know that there is a variety of different loan programs that are affective to get rid of student loans. But majority of these loans have certain restrictions that are not feasible for you.
A high school counselor from Ellis, Kan, Mr. Troy Dale have been paying off $23, 000 student loans since last ten years and this paying off will continue until their oldest child get enrolled in college.
Due to this Dale searched loan forgiveness program to shed a loan burden from his family. He found variety of loan forgiveness programs, including a national debt forgiveness program that is designed for public service workers and one particularly for school teachers.
Unfortunately, he could not meet the requirements completely. According to these requirements, Dale and his Jessica were required to switch schools or teach various subjects.
Dale said, “It’s really frustrating that there is just nothing out there for us, we’re not exactly knocking the top of the roof off with our salaries.”
Besides all the frustration that Dale did what every public service employee should do. Dale kept searching more programs, said communications director for the Institute for College Access and Success, Edie Irons.
There are certain really beneficial and feasible programs to pay off student loans, but either they are not completely understood yet or they are not advertised in wise manner. All you have to do is to search these programs by your self.
Iron said, “There is still a lot of outreach that needs to be done, you shouldn’t have to go on a treasure hunt to find them. But there is no national repository of all this information.”
Programs those are available for the 3.5 million school teachers of the nation:
Public service debt forgiveness:
This program is designed for those who have to pay off the remaining debts and have worked in any public service field for 10 years at least, mean while paid off their debts. The pin point is that even if you worked 9 years and 11 months in a public service profession and in the 12th year you quit then you are not eligible to get this program.
Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of FinAid.org and FastWeb.com said, “This program provides only back-end help that kicks in after you’ve followed all the rules for 10 full years”.
This program is really very feasible for all workers who have worked in public service fields. If they have a heavy burden of loan remained even after paying off in ten years then this program will help to pay off the last penny.
Who is Eligible? Government employers, state, federal or local workers, non profit organizations working under tax code section 501(c) (3), workers, Peace Corps or AmeriCorps workers. Individuals, who provide their service for disabled, work in their early childhood education or public service law, are also eligible even if they work a profit organization.
Federal Perkins loan forgiveness:
This program is particularly designed for low income families’ teachers or who teach particular populations or subjects, like special needs student. This program pays off Perkins loans over 5 years.
You can search the U.S department of Education list of public school districts in low-income neighborhoods at www.tcli.ed.gov.
You can still qualify even if your school is not in a low –income district. To qualify the requirement is to teach disabled children or teach specific subjects full time such as including math, science, a foreign language or bilingual education.
This program will help you to pay off 100% of the Perkins loans over a five year period, only if you qualify for this program. This program pay off 15% of your loan balance in the first year and then another 15% in the second year, 20% in the 3rd and 4th year and the rest 30% in the 5th year.
Stafford loan forgiveness:
There is a program that can pay off over $17, 500 of your loan balance if you are troubled with Stafford loans.
The eligibility for this program is quite similar to that of Perkins forgiveness program. But there are strict conditions for the qualification if you don’t teach in a low-income school, Kantrowitz said.
In more simple form, you are required to be a stated certified teacher and must be teaching in the subject field that you studied. In certain cases, you are required to clear a test.
These three programs are representing the available national programs, Kantrowitz said. There is a variety of other programs that are based on the conditions of where you teach and what you teach. Kantrowitz further said, The American Federation of Teachers maintains the most comprehensive lists of the loan pay off programs and grants are available for the educators. You can search the AFT database by considering what you teach and where you teach.
Dale can qualify for these cancellation and grants programs, as he is a counselor and his wife is a physical education teacher. There are teaching in a rural and middle income area. Dale can switch schools and can teach different subjects for the improvement of his chances, but in this kind of economical situation, he doesn’t want to risk a consistent paycheck for the loan forgiveness program possibility.
Kantrowitz, who is the financial aid expert, stated that there are a variety of loan forgiveness and cancellation programs for the public health workers, members of military and nurses that he lists on his official site at www.finaid.org.
His site falls short if he tries to present a comprehensive look at all the programs available. Too many programs are being offered by various entities such as state and federal government, corporate sponsors, trade groups, in order to keep a comprehensive listings.
Kantrowitz said, “”There are a fair number of programs out there, but a lot of people don’t know how to go about finding them or applying for them, It’s incumbent on you to seek these programs out.”
