Before you think about cosigning a loan agreement, you need to consider many important things. For instance, are there any issues that can create legal mess for you later on? Regardless of who is advising you to opt for cosigning the loan, you need to consider all the possible problems that may arise in your way later on.
Some important responsibilities of co-signer
Starting from the definition, a co signer is the person that provides the guarantee that if the borrower would not pay back the loan, he would be held responsible for that and would pay back the amount at place of the borrower. If some one has signed one such deal, even the original borrower can blackmail the co signer later on and can ask him to pay rest of the money. If the agreement is not followed and all the conditions do not fulfilled in terms of payment by the borrower, the lender has the right to sue the co signer.
If you are a co signer and the borrower you provided the guarantee for has defaulted, this act would hurt you as much as to the original borrower. Your credit raking would be ruined and you would lose the credibility in the financial market. And in future when you would apply for some loan, this kind of history can significantly affect the amount and interest rate that would be offered to you.
Making the right decision
Now while deciding upon whether you should co sign an agreement or not depends upon many things. For instance, you need to consider the financial position of the person for whom you are going to co sign the document, see carefully whether he has the ability to pay the borrowed money back or not or can pay back the installments of car or house.
Most importantly you need to consider the track record of dealing of a person. If you have found him or her fair and honest in his or her matters and general dealings, you can go about co signing the agreement for him or her. However, if the person is not reliable in general dealings, just do not think about co signing an agreement for him or her.
