Do Credit Card Debt Settlement Yourself

Posted on 09 May 2010

Credit card debt settlement can be resolved by yourself and its not that difficult too. You can save  your money by negotiating with the creditor yourself and ask for the credit card debt settlement.  Following are some steps you need to go through, to get rid of your credit card debts and the creditors as well.

Credit Card Debt Settlement

Prepare yourself before making a call to Creditor

Before calling the creditor for making a debt settlement, you should have everything necessary in front of you. These things are:

  • Copy of your most recent bills.
  • Creditor’s letters in which settlement is offered.
  • A specific amount which you should pay for debt settlement either a sum  of all or monthly payment amount.

Make a call to creditor

One thing you must be aware of is that, if your amount is seriously due for past 4-6 months, then don’t expect friendly behavior from the collection department. Collectors are already well trained for verifying your personal information such as phone number, employment and home address; they also know how to recover their money. Some collectors are well versed in settlement arrangements and some refuse to any settlement arrangement. So you have to make them clear right at the beginning of the call for making a payment or for a debt settlement.

Try to speak with in charge

It is very embarrassing if the creditor refuses to budge. If so happens, you need to stay calm; there are three options available to you:

  • Just disconnect the call by using polite words. Disrespectful words can only make the things worse for you. Keep in mind that most of calls are recorded and monitored.
  • It is better to talk to a supervisor or department manager. Because they are the responsible one and want to make reasonable payment arrangements or settlements.
  • Or write a letter to that company’s department manager or the president and outline your plan to pay off or settle the account, and be specific in regards to the amount you will be paying and the dates you will be making the payments.

Ideal Credit Settlements

The credit settlement is one which you can reduce to a manageable amount. All you want is all of the late fees, finance charges and over the limit fees get removed from your account. Mainly these are the three things which contain 30 to 40% of the total balance. If your creditor refuses to settle within the 30 to 40 percent range then don’t make the settlement at that time. You will be having an upper hand because you tried to make a settlement and within few weeks you will get a settlement letter from them with more favorable terms. While this may be serious, waiting out the creditor may save your money in the end.

The things that you don’t have to do for making settlement

Some specific things can ruin your efforts for settling credit card debt. Always avoid those drawbacks so that you can get rid of creditors and can rebuild your credit. Here are some necessary things which you must remember:

  • You must be having record of your all conversations with the creditors along dates, time and off course the name of person to whom you spoke with. This comprehensive record keeping can be useful for you in future if you got any dispute over payment or settlement arrangements.
  • Never argue or use disrespectful language with the creditors. The phone calls are often recorded and that can make bad impact of yours on creditors. Then it will be hard if they offer you a favorable settlement amount.
  • Never write “paid in full” on any of the checks which you write to a creditor, specifically when the amount that wasn’t agreed upon.
  • When you make a settlement with the creditor then take a letter with agreed upon amount of the settlement or similar payment arrangement. Because in some states only a verbal agreement is acceptable.
  • The most important thing is that you must know your rights. Majority of creditors counts on that you don’t know your rights so that they can intimidate you. You can know your rights on Fair Debt Collection Practices Act by visiting The Federal Trade Commission.

Conclusion

If you are well prepared then you can settle your credit card debts. The more you will be prepared the more better result you will get.
