How to Get a Student Credit Card in Tough Financial Times

It was quite easy for college students to get credit cards in the past. Being independent for the first time, most students signed up for credit cards to get the feeling of financial freedom although they did not have any steady source of income to pay off their debt. And in case the balance on one card ran up, it wasn’t hard to find another creditor waiting with card holder agreement in hand.

Bur recently, things have changed. For the first time in years, college students are having a hard time getting approved for credit. Some may consider this good, but it is a fact that students need to have access to money if an emergency arises. Credit cards can help in emergencies to pay for sudden cash requirement.

In case you want to apply for a student credit card, follow these three tips to get one.

Use the Internet

The Internet is the best way to search for such deals. Although the cards may have a higher-than-average interest rate, but the online lending companies readily give credit cards to college students, who frequently have little or no credit history.

Check With Your Bank

If you have a checking account in a bank and you’ve been doing your banking at the same place for six months to a year, the bank may take you to be credible. But this can only be possible if you’ve kept a positive balance and haven’t any bounced checks. You could use your financial history and current employment to convince your bank to issue you a student credit card.

Ask Your Parents

You can ask your parents to add you as an authorized user on their credit card account. It will be possible for you to make purchases with the credit card, and the account history will show up on your credit report. But the opposite can also happen, i.e. if your parents go into bad credit, it might ruin your account history as well, so be careful.

Student credit cards are not that easily available as they used to be, but don’t be disappointed as there is still hope. You can use the Internet, your bank or your parents for help and seek out a card that suits you best.
